The I Ching or Book of Changes, is one of the oldest written works in the world. It has been
studied by eastern and western scholars for more than 2,000 years as the interaction of Yin
and Yang, more specifically described as pairs of eight Energies, which yield 64 combinations.
Participants will learn to “build” the 64 Hexagrams through coin tossing and make the ancient
commentaries relevant through physical exploration and meditation. Students of Chinese
philosophy, martial arts, meditation or Reiki will find this class helpful in expanding their
practices. Please wear comfortable clothing. Any copy of the I Ching would be helpful, but not
necessary, as various translations will be available.
Barrie Austin M.Ed.
A student of martial arts since 1982 and an instructor since 2001, Barrie was encouraged
to study Chinese Philosophy to compliment her practice of T’ai Chi, a Chinese martial art.
This study changed her observations of life, inspiring her physical and spiritual practices.
As a Reiki Master, she uses her increased awareness of the Energies to ground herself and
guide treatment. As an instructor, she passionately leads her students to develop their
own understanding of these Energies with lessons that strengthen body and mind. Her
past experience as a professional dancer and NYC public school teacher give her the
perspective to patiently, but persistently, push students to their individual limits, while
encouraging a light, supportive classroom environment.
